Township Teaching Experience and the Schools’ Assist Programme
Are you looking to take time out from your life to make a positive difference? Through our teacher training we have developed the Schools’ Assist Programme, providing teaching experience to trainees, whilst benefitting local students. Positively a win-win scenario! TEFL/TESOL trainees have the option to complete all or part of their practical training through the programme, assisting local English departments that are challenged with a lack of mother-tongue English teachers. The experience is highly rewarding as well as extremely valuable, especially for those who have not had any previous teaching experience. The standard duration of practical training is one intensive week, but you are welcome to volunteer more hours if you desire, with some past trainee-volunteers having clocked up several months of experience through the programme. The programme has had a dramatic and positive effect on the results of learners. At Ikamvalethu in Langa the pass rate in English has doubled from 40% to 80% over the duration of the project. Where once there was graffiti, the classes that have benefitted from these motivated teachers are now invariably decorated with meaningful displays and learning aids. All hours worked are recognised in a reference letter from the school, providing a precious reference for future employers. Work with non-governmental /non-profit organisiationsSeparately from our teacher training and the Schools’ Assist Programme, we are also promoting new opportunities for TEFL/TESOL teachers here in South Africa. For many English teachers who train specifically to teach overseas, often realize that they love teaching. For these people, returning home can be disappointing to find that locally English teachers are not very well rewarded, financially. We are actively promoting the value that the TEFL/TESOL skill set can bring to community development. One such project is a pre-school, teacher training pilot that we are running funded by SASDI (Southern Africa Sustainability Development Initiative). The great thing here is that the bulk of the funds needed to train the pre-school teachers comes from foreign donors. We have forged links with some local schools whose We also run workshops in collaboration with NGO/NPOs |
