Our location: Cape Town, Western Cape

Cape Town, known locally as the Mother City, is the oldest city in South Africa and is dramatically overlooked by the iconic Table Mountain. The Table Mountain range stretches the length of the Cape Peninsula, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the warmer currents of the Indian Ocean to the east.

The history, mix of cultures and wide range of activities make Cape Town an ideal base. Explore the Cape Peninsula, mountains, beaches, oceans and the winelands of Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, which are all on our doorstep!

The Western Cape Province, of which Cape Town is the capital, is renowned for a wide range of attractions, all within a few hours’ drive. From The Kango Caves of Oudtshoorn to the weathered sandstone peaks of the Cederberg; dive with sharks or paraglide off a mountain; there’s something for all tastes .

For getting around, the Baz Bus provides a good option for budget travelers who want to ‘hop on and off’ while visiting different places. Intercape and Greyhound have regular routes for longer journeys and the Shosoloza Meyl sleeper trains connect Cape Town with the major cities of Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth. There are a number of budget car hire companies in Cape Town that cater to longer-term tourists. Besides the international airlines, South Africa has a number of budget airlines that fly out of Cape Town, connecting with the major cities.

Vegetation of the region is extremely diverse, with the Cape Floral Kingdom being the smallest and richest of the world's six floral kingdoms. It is extremely rich in species diversity, with more plant species occurring on Table Mountain than the entire United Kingdom. It is characterised by various types of shrubs, thousands of flowering plant species and some small trees.

The province also boasts three internationally acclaimed universities, namely the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and the University of The Western Cape.

Rosebank, Cape Town

The Knowledge Workshop is located in the historic, university suburb of Rosebank, Cape Town – a few minutes from the City Centre. Rosebank railway station is a 2 minute walk away, providing safe and easy access to everywhere from the City Centre to the beaches, bars and restaurants of Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fishhoek and Simon’s Town. The Mowbray taxi terminus is also within walking distance, providing connections to many local destinations.

Rosebank is located on the eastern slope of Devil's Peak (the peak to the left of Table Mountain when viewed from the city), stretching down to the Liesbeek River, and up to the edge of Rondebosch Common - declared a national monument and an important fynbos (endemic vegetation) conservation area.

The Knowledge Workshopis located in a tranquil village-like area between the Railway line and Liesbeek Parkway. The Alma Café is around the corner on Alma Road. Formerly the Alma Supply store, it traditionally supplied newspapers and groceries to the area. These days the Café is a thriving music venue, bar and café. Breakfasts, light meals, home-bakes and live music in the evenings flow freely, providing a special focal point for our little area of Cape Town!

On the west, Rosebank is bounded by the M3 freeway. The historically significant Mostert's Mill (C.1796) is located just next to the freeway. Much of the land between the M3 and Main Road, which runs north-south through the suburb, belongs to the University of Cape Town and is used for residences and sports fields. The area around Main Road is a mixture of residential property, shops and businesses. Rosebank has a large student population.

Activities and points of interest in our immediate area include:

  • Rondebosch Common
  • Rhodes Memorial
  • Nightlife of Observatory, Rondebosch and Mowbray
  • Hiking (on Devils Peak)
  • Baxter Theatre
  • Newlands Stadium and Cricket Ground
  • Rondebosch Craft Market
  • Liesbeek River Trail
  • The Heart and Lung museum at Groote Schuur hospital, a memorial to Christian Barnard the transplant pioneer.

Rondebosch, Observatory and Little Mowbray, all within easy reach, have a wide variety of bars and eateries between them. Shopping in Rondebosch is a pleasant mix of ‘High Street’ boutiques and shops and small shopping centres located along Main Road, within walking distance of the school.
